“Les Journées Européennes du Patrimoine”

For the first time, La Grave Béchade welcomed visitors to its 2023 European Heritage Days on 16 and 17 September.

More than 150 visitors wandered through the alleys, cellars and fields. While the castle and its history were an eagerly-awaited success, the public were surprised by the hazelnut plantation, which is much less well known.
Of course, such an event could not end without a tasting of our wines, with lots of conviviality, friendship and smiles.
This first participation in the European Heritage Days was a success. And the whole Grave Béchade team is already looking forward to welcoming visitors again for the 2024 event, which will be held here on Sunday 22 September.

IVBD – Périgord attitude

PERIGORD ATTITUDE – LILLE – Winemakers and Producers Together to Showcase Culture and Terroir.

Organized by the magazine “Terre de vin” (https://www.terredevins.com/) and the Interprofessional Association of Bergerac Duras Wines (IVBD: http://www.vins-bergeracduras.fr/decouvrez/presentation-et-histoire/, https://www.facebook.com/BergeracDurasVins/)

Let’s look back at the Grande Dégustation (Great Tasting) event that took place in Lille on November 28th, where the team from Château La Grave Béchade was motivated and proud to participate in such an event alongside professionals from the region.

It is always a real pleasure to present our products to curious and passionate individuals and, at the same time, introduce them to our beautiful region, which is often unknown to the general public.

Warmly welcomed in the “Grand Play Ground” space on Pierre Mauroy commercial street in Lille, a beautiful dedicated space for our wines and culinary products for one evening.

More than 500 people attended the event to wander through the various stands showcasing appellations such as Montravel, Pecharmant, Bergerac, Rosette, Saussignac, Côte de Duras, as well as stands featuring poultry, duck, lamb, strawberries, and Périgord walnuts.

Everyone was transported by the delicious blends of flavours that burst in the mouth, a true delight.

It was a wonderful evening for the team at Château La Grave Béchade, filled with discoveries and new encounters.

LANDINI

Une Belle journée avec des partenaires locaux– « La REXpérience » au château La Grave Bechade.

Landini, a leading Italian tractor manufacturer (https://www.landini.it/), presents its latest generations of specialized REX tractors during a worldwide tour. From Spain to Australia, passing through Egypt and Bulgaria.

On October 12th, Château La Grave Bechade had the immense privilege of hosting them during their visit to France, providing an opportunity to unite local partners.

We would like to thank Mr. Olivier Pinasseau, manager of SARL MATIGNON since 2005, a major player in the region through his proximity sales and tractor repair business, for being the intermediary between ARGO TRACTORS, the representative of the LANDINI brand in France (https://www.facebook.com/LandiniTractors.France/; https://www.landini.it/fr/; https://www.argotractors.com/fr/), who were looking for a venue in the region, and Château La Grave Bechade.

The connection was immediate. The logistics, led by Théophane Girard, marketing and network development coordinator, took shape, evolved, and materialized.

The guests discovered the premises, marvelled at the presentation, the setup of the tractors, and the beauty of the estate.

TRAITEUR OSSARD (https://ossard-traiteur.com/; https://www.facebook.com/innovation.traiteur) created a warm and delicious moment during the lunchtime cocktail, offering a service worthy of its regional reputation.

A true cohesion was formed among all the guests, partners, and organizers. Their curiosity awakened… they imagined themselves behind the wheel of these machines… The tests began and continued under the sun.

This successful day ended with Théophane’s words: “Beautiful day, warm welcome, excellent organization, and very good caterer. Thank you to Virginie and her team for the Argo France Landini day.”

What we received the next day, to our great joy and reward, brought us immense joy and pride:

“So, yesterday we had our Landini day in your beautiful estate. We were fortunate to have bright sunshine welcoming our clients upon their arrival. Your magnificent site was perfectly suited for the planned organization, and we are delighted with the unanimous feedback from our clients, not only those from our area, as I had guests from Gironde, and fellow dealers came with clients from Tarn-et-Garonne, Gers, and Dordogne.

Thank you to David Lançon and his team for preparing the surroundings so that we could occupy all the available space, for providing us with a vineyard plot for demonstrations, and even for highlighting your fleet of Landini tractors.

Thank you to Virginie for her hospitality and presence throughout the day. We truly felt welcomed, and it was very pleasant. Excellent choice regarding the caterer, as I not only saw the desire to support a local service provider but also the commitment to…quality and originality for this wonderful buffet.

Yours sincerely,
Olivier Pinasseau
SARL MATIGNON”

LOVING AQUITAINE

On an ordinary day, a man walks through the door of my office to ask for a history book. It is through this fortunate coincidence that everything began…

This is the encounter with Pascal. He tells me about his journey and that of his wife: he is a nurse, she is a historian at the Bordeaux archives. Tired of working separately, a common desire arises to combine their passions for history and cooking through a new challenge.

They create “LOVING AQUITAINE” at lovingaquitaine.com and facebook.com/lovingaquitaine in Sainte-Colombes de Duras. The result of an extraordinary duo, with Pascal in service and Sylvie in the kitchen, united and supportive in their work as well as in their life. Sylvie cooks with local products and brings back to life forgotten ones. They offer meticulously crafted and refined food and wine pairings, accompanied by historical anecdotes. Unique themes. With their great interpersonal skills, they perfectly cater to the demands and curiosities of customers who come to discover the region.

Thus, through their connection, the château met a couple of their friends: Tracy and David. An unconventional life, split between their native country, England, and their “love at first sight” country, France. A vacation in Monségur became the beginning of their new professional adventure. Falling in love with this Girondin village, located 6km from the château, they purchased a house that they began renting to acquaintances when they had to return to England. They are now at the helm of their own agency, “HOLIDAY COTTAGES & VILLAS,” with 68 high-end properties listed, including Château La Grave Béchade…

What beautiful professional encounters forging exceptional bonds…

Château La Grave Béchade, a domaine in the heart of its vineyard…

Wine plays a significant role in the history of Château La Grave Béchade.

The vineyards were already established on the estate during the construction of the mansion in 1876 by Mr. Abdon Bechade (1836/1897). At that time, cattle, horses, fruit trees, and market gardens complemented the agricultural life of the “lieudit La grave.”

The land became solely devoted to viticulture around the 1970s.

It was in the 1980s to 2000s that the wine reached its apex.

Significant work was undertaken to install the vat rooms and barrel cellars.

By combining the name of its builder and the postal address of the estate, the name we know today emerged.

The modernization of work techniques, better understanding of the soil, new winemaking methods following the production specifications linked to the appellations, and the creation of these labels contributed to the growth of these wines.

From this south-facing land, in the heart and colours of Duras, these fruity and harmonious wines are born under the name “Château La Grave Béchade,” thus creating its reputation. At that time, the estate had 120 hectares of vineyards and produced red, rosé, and dry white wines, which were often awarded numerous medals.

The grape varieties cultivated at the time are still the same: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc. Classified under the AOC Côte de Duras appellation, this appellation, labelled since 1937, has greatly enhanced the value and nobility of these wines over the past thirty years. However, it remains a relatively unknown appellation.

Since 2015, the estate has undergone an innovative transformation.

Mr. Burrus, owner of the French chocolate factory SCHAAL and already the purchaser of nurseries and hazelnuts in Guyenne, has been developing hazelnut cultivation in the north of Lot-et-Garonne through land acquisition. He has become the new owner of “Château La Grave Béchade.”

For the history and distinction of this fruit, he retains 25 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, grape varieties that produce this fruity red wine. He entrusts the winemaking and vinification to the cooperative cellar of Duras, “Berticot” (Instagram: Berticotgraman, Facebook: Berticot – Côtes de Duras).

While the cultivation is still managed by the estate, the cooperative perpetuates the quality and excellence of these wines, which received a silver medal this year for the 2018 vintage at the Concours Général Agricole de Paris (https://lagravebecahde.fr – see wine section).

Previously a private property, the estate is now open to the public with cellar visits and tastings of its wines and chocolates on the premises.

Additionally, vacation rentals, receptions, and seminars are now possible, allowing future customers to discover this well-preserved heritage. Furthermore, thanks to its wine, Château La Grave Béchade is part of oenotourism circuits such as “The Bergerac-Duras Wine Route,” “La Maison des Vins de Duras,” “Quai Cyrano in Bergerac,” and the “Interprofession des Vins de Bergerac/Duras (IVBD),” which is highly involved in the development of our appellation

We look forward to welcoming you and introducing you to these wines at Château La Grave Béchade!

Group visits

On Friday, March 10, 2020, we had the pleasure of welcoming the “Camping-Car Club Sud Motorhome” association to Château La Grave Béchade.

This Toulouse-based club, established in 2003, brings together nearly 400 members from twenty departments in the southwest of France. Its affiliation with the French Federation of Motorhome Associations and Clubs has allowed for collaborations with clubs in Italy, Spain, and Portugal.

Thanks to a “discovery” tour of Lot-et-Garonne organized by Marie Gombao and the club’s treasurer, Alain Cazenave, the association members had the opportunity to visit our estate for a stopover. Around forty dynamic and friendly individuals had the pleasure of observing our cellars and tasting our wines and chocolates. It was a moment of conviviality and sharing that we remember fondly.

Follow their news on Facebook.

Once the health crisis has passed, Château La Grave Béchade will be delighted to welcome groups again and showcase this unique heritage.

In the meantime, take good care of yourself and your loved ones.
